A Decade of Pivots
Ten years ago, Insta360's first panoramic camera, the Nano, was a gadget that needed explaining. It plugged directly into an iPhone, a physical workaround to cut transfer friction, but it still forced users through a chore: shoot, transfer, stitch, then hunt through a 360-degree sphere for the frame that mattered.
Fast forward to today, and the product line has morphed from Nano to ONE to the X series, finding early traction with skiers, cyclists, and motorcyclists who couldn't spare attention for framing mid-action. But somewhere around the X5, something shifted. Insta360's data now shows over half of panoramic camera buyers aren't buying for sports at all—they're buying for travel, family gatherings, graduations, weddings.
That quiet pivot is the real story here. It's not just a hardware refresh; it's a competitive repositioning aimed at a much larger, less adrenaline-fueled market.
The Problem with 'Shoot Now, Frame Later'
The panoramic camera's core promise has always been 'shoot now, frame later.' You capture everything, then decide what to show. That solved a real problem for action sports, where you can't stop mid-run to compose a shot. But it created a new one: after the fun, you still had to edit.
Founder Liu Jingkang puts it bluntly: 'Our company's mission is that the ideal camera should make you forget the camera exists. It should be unconscious.' That means the camera should handle the boring parts—selecting clips, choosing angles, cutting—so the user can stay in the moment.
That's the gap they're attacking with the X6. They've built a custom AI model called PanoMind, trained on over 10,000 hours of footage across 30-plus scenarios, from diving to road trips. The idea is simple: plug the camera in at night, and by morning you've got a finished video, no editing required.
From Camera to AI Director
The X6's 'AI Director' feature is the centerpiece. It analyzes the day's footage, picks highlights, designs virtual camera moves, and cuts everything together while the camera charges. Users wake up to a polished clip. If they want more control, there's a 'One-Tap Edit 2.0' and a 'Moment Pro' mode that lets you specify people, scenes, themes, and length.
This is a fundamental shift in the panoramic camera's logic. Previously, you deferred framing from before the shot to after. Now Insta360 wants to defer even that post-shot framing to the AI.
There's also a first-person head-tracking module that lets you wear the camera on your chest and simply look around—the camera follows your head, outputting a flat video without ever requiring you to revisit the 360-degree source. A 'Gimbal Mode 2.0' uses the full spherical capture to simulate a virtual gimbal, complete with a joystick-equipped selfie stick for pan, zoom, and tracking, all while outputting 4K directly.
In one device, Insta360 is trying to cover the ground of a panoramic camera, a gimbal camera, and a wide-angle action cam—all wrapped around the same principle: reduce the user's attention load on the act of filming.
Recording vs. Creating: A Key Competitive Distinction
Liu is careful to separate 'recording' from 'creation.' He argues that creation is a well-served market: if you want to make art, you have plenty of tools—high-end cameras, cinema lenses, full manual control. But recording is different. You can't hire a cameraman to follow you around for every precious moment.
'Recording can never be fully satisfied,' he says. 'You can't always have a photographer capture every great moment.' That's the gap Insta360 is chasing. And it's a bigger market than action sports, which, while visible and shareable, is niche compared to everyday moments—travel, family time, watching your kid grow.
Liu even calls 'how to make girls look good' and 'how to document children growing up' the biggest common denominators in ordinary user needs. That's a far cry from the helmet-cam crowd.
Why the Market Isn't as Small as It Seems
Critics might ask: who needs a panoramic camera when phones already shoot video? Liu's answer is that market size isn't a fixed number; it's a function of how many problems a product solves. 'The market isn't predicted by a model; it depends on how many problems you solve,' he says. He points out that panoramic cameras are still two orders of magnitude away from smartphone penetration—but that's not a ceiling, it's an opportunity.
He doesn't worry about tech moats either. Chips and sensors are transparent; competitors can copy them. The real edge, he argues, comes from spotting needs earlier, deploying tech sooner, and building user habits before anyone else catches up. 'The barrier is consumer choice habits and the organizational habit of continuously creating new barriers,' he says.
The Road to 12K, 16K, and AI Photographers
Hardware still has room to grow. The X6 already shoots 8K, but because that resolution is spread across a full sphere, the effective pixels in any single view are limited. Liu expects panoramic cameras to move to 12K and 16K, but that raises a problem: more data means more processing, yet the device can't balloon in size or battery. So the future lies in higher-resolution sensors, more advanced chips, and lower-power AI processing.
But the bigger shift is AI. Today, the X6 edits while charging because on-device compute is limited. Eventually, Liu envisions a camera with enough on-board power to edit instantly—'shoot and edit' in real time. He calls this the 'AI photographer' concept: a camera that understands what you're looking at, who you care about, and what you want to remember.
Over time, he expects algorithms to learn individual preferences, much like recommendation feeds. 'People will have different editing styles, just like they have different tastes in music,' he says. He thinks this could mature within two years.
Beyond Video: Recording Space Itself
Liu also showed a demo of 3D spatial reconstruction, where you can not only change your viewing angle but also move your viewpoint—step closer, circle around—inside a recorded space. Today's panoramic playback lets you turn your head, but not move your feet. That's a limitation he wants to break.
Eventually, he sees panoramic cameras as wearable devices that capture not just a moment but an entire environment. 'Photos capture a moment, videos capture a timeline, but spatial imaging captures the whole environment,' he says. That could lead to VR making a comeback, with today's panoramic content becoming the raw material for immersive experiences.
The 'Photography Robot' and a Possible Future Without Cameras
Liu's long-term vision is what he calls a 'photography robot'—a machine that autonomously finds the best position, angle, and focal length. Drones are the closest physical form today, but the idea extends to any device that automates the entire capture process.
Interestingly, he doesn't rule out a future where dedicated panoramic cameras disappear. AI might let you shoot ordinary flat photos and reconstruct a 3D space later. 'We might become a software company,' he says. But one thing he believes AI won't replace is the desire to authentically record a moment that mattered. 'The fundamental reason to press the shutter is that this moment is worth remembering,' he says.
There's even a new use case emerging: clients are using Insta360 cameras to collect data for embodied AI robots. A panoramic camera captures not just what's in front of a person but the entire context—what others are doing, the surrounding environment. That's exactly how the Nano found its action sports niche a decade ago: users repurposed it beyond its intended design.
For competitors, the lesson is clear: Insta360 isn't just iterating on hardware; it's redefining the category around 'unconscious recording.' Whoever cracks that first may not just win the panoramic camera market—they might own the next wave of everyday visual documentation.
